About the Work

Metal and stone have built human civilization and modern society. Our cities, infrastructure and technology could not exist without them. We could also not exist without these two components. Our bones are made of calcium, iron flows in our blood, and the minerals that compose rock are essentially the same ones that ensure our existence. Metal and stone have also given us the means and justification to eradicate human life. There have been countless deaths from guns and swords, nuclear weapons made with uranium and plutonium, and genocides have occurred over raw materials such as diamonds and precious metals. As more deaths have resulted from the advances of technology, we continue to use the eternal solidarity of stone to entomb and mark the graves of our dead. That which is made from stone is rendered transient through the expanse of time, becoming objects that transcend human existence. Ancient stone monuments and tombs will likely outlast human civilization which has been a brief and violent chapter in the history of the planet. Our greatest contemporary monuments and architectural wonders constructed of man-made materials will crumble without human caretakers and will inevitably be reclaimed. This begs the question: what will be remembered of humanity after we have been eradicated or become extinct through our own actions or lack thereof? The only thing left will be our graves made of stone, ensuring that our existence is remembered.
